Remember the Dream

Remember the Dream

Feeling overwhelmed by the recent violence in Portland, I wrote this poem to honor and remember the dream of Martin Luther King Jr.

Remember the Dream

a heart filled with hate
and eyes tunnel visioned
a brain filled with simplicities
and focused on division

a heart full of love
and eyes full of tears
a brain filled with complexities
and paralyzed by fears

hearts out of synch
and eyes disconnected
brains miscommunicating
and issues projected

a heart full of grace
and eyes seeing the wall
a brain focused on justice
and liberty for all

hearts beating slower
and eyes now engaged
brains feeling safe
and also enraged

hearts trying to empathize
and eyes questioning the regime
brains honoring the past
and remembering the dream
