Through utilizing my ever growing collection of nature based metaphors, I will briefly reflect on my most recent camping road trip adventure.
Nature Based Metaphors and My Life
Nature based metaphors are a powerful tool to use when trying to understand the dynamics and behavior of something potentially intangible. Recently I turned off my cell phone for the weekend and escaped on a camping road trip around NE Washington. My ultimate goal focused on disconnection from the every day hustle. However, now reflecting back on my experience, I realize that I actually longed for a re-connection to nature. And, to highlight the complexity of my internal adventure, I will use nature based metaphors to explore my intense weekend journey. The nature based metaphor themes include: earth, water, wind, heart, and fire.
My Brother My Brother and Me (MBMBaM) is a weekly comedy/advice podcast by the McElroy brothers. On March 18th, 2017 I wanted to do more than attend the Portland MBMBaM Live Show. Inspired by the amazing MBMBaM community the McElroy brothers have cultivated, I wanted to give back in a major way. And with only 2 weeks to plan, my seedling of an idea unexpectedly flourished into a bountiful success.
MBMBaM Live Show: A Portland Fundraising Success
With help from The Sweet Baby Sisters, the Portland My Brother My Brother and Me (MBMBaM) community raised $869 for Portland Homeless Family Solutions, had a successful letter writing campaign, and spread those good good vibes. This blog is to capture my incredible experience with the MBMBaM Live Show, describe The Sweet Baby Sisters’ origin story, and highlight many lessons learned during my whirlwind of an adventure.
I woke up this morning, struggling with starting my day. After realizing the date, I sat down to write a quick poem to process my thoughts. This poem is about some of my personal experience with grief and loss, and how it still affects me today.
Grief and Loss: Tuesday, March 7th
My dorm phone is ringing
Not my cell phone
I barely achieve consciousness
From a deep slumber
I try to fall back to sleep
It’s around 2am
On Tuesday, March 7th
A list of camping life lessons I created in 2016 after a fun large group campout in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Just Simply Alice’s Camping Preparations
-Always bring something to share. (Well, something that people would want.)
-You don’t need your wallet when in the middle of the woods.
-Bring lots of Q-tips if you plan to mud wrestle.
I wrote this poem about a fictional stale marriage using inspiration from a Creative Collaboration. I posted on Facebook: “Look to your right, what do you see?” All answers to the question are formatted in the poem like *this*, and I wrote the poem within the goal of an hour.
A Stale Marriage
Stuck between *dirty dishes
A red bed pillow
And the wall*
